Hugging Face uses Claude Opus to teach CUDA skills to open-source models

huggingface released 'upskill', a tool that uses a teacher model (claude opus 4.5) to generate agent skills for hard tasks. in a test writing cuda kernels, the transferred skill improved accuracy for some open-source models but not all. the method allows smaller, local models to tackle specialized problems they normally fail at.

Hugging Face introduced 'upskill', a new tool designed to transfer capabilities from frontier models to smaller, open-source alternatives. In their benchmark, engineers used Claude Opus 4.5 to generate an agent skill for writing CUDA kernels—a task typically too difficult for local models. The process involves capturing traces from the teacher model, converting them into standardized skill files, and evaluating their impact on target models. Results showed that while the transferred skill improved accuracy for some open-source models, performance gains were not uniform across the board.
